EU Reaffirms Commitment to End CO2-Emitting Car Sales by 2035 Amid Industry Concerns

BRUSSELS, Nov 7 - The European Union's climate commissioner reiterated plans to ban the sale of new CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035, following requests from some member states and automakers for a review of these policies. This law will effectively prohibit new diesel and petrol engines from entering the market.

Tighter CO2 emissions limits for car manufacturers will come into effect next year. Italy and the Czech Republic have raised concerns about declining electric vehicle sales, suggesting that automakers may struggle to meet these targets and have called for an urgent reassessment.

During a hearing in the European Parliament, climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra emphasized the importance of stable climate regulations for investment confidence. He indicated that discussions with the automotive sector would focus on how to achieve the established targets while ensuring predictability for the industry.

Hoekstra noted that several automotive CEOs expressed confidence in their ability to meet the targets but also highlighted the need for increased public investment in electric vehicle charging infrastructure. He acknowledged this request as reasonable.

The European Commission has already adjusted the 2035 phase-out timeline to permit the sale of vehicles powered by e-fuels after the deadline, responding to Germany's request. When questioned about the potential inclusion of biofuels in future policies, Hoekstra stated that he could not alter previously agreed terms regarding automotive emissions.

Automakers have warned of significant financial penalties if they fail to comply with the new CO2 limits, although Hoekstra suggested that concerns about the severity of these penalties may be exaggerated, referencing previous fines faced by companies like Volkswagen.

Hoekstra is seeking approval from the European Parliament for an extension of his term overseeing EU climate policies, with a decision expected later this month.
