Elon Musk's X Faces Criticism Over Ineffective Community Notes Amid U.S. Election Misinformation

On October 31, a report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) highlighted significant shortcomings in the Community Notes feature of Elon Musk's social media platform, X. The report analyzed 283 misleading posts related to the upcoming U.S. election and found that 74% of these posts, totaling 209, did not display accurate notes to users correcting false information.

These misleading posts have collectively garnered 2.2 billion views, prompting CCDH to call for increased investment in safety and transparency from the platform. Musk has recently endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and has been accused of spreading misinformation regarding the election, including unfounded claims about undocumented migrants voting.

X has faced scrutiny from various governments, including those of Australia, the United Kingdom, and Brazil, regarding the spread of misinformation. Earlier this year, X lost a lawsuit filed by CCDH for its role in the proliferation of hate speech on its platform. In August, secretaries of state from five U.S. states urged Musk to address issues with X's AI chatbot, which had been disseminating election-related misinformation.
