North Korea Conducts Ballistic Missile Test, Escalating Tensions in the Region

On October 31, 2024, North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sea off its eastern coast, marking its first such test since December of the previous year. The missile was reportedly a long-range ballistic missile fired at a steep angle, according to the South Korean General Staff.

The launch occurred in the morning local time, north of the capital Pyongyang, and the missile traveled approximately 1,000 kilometers before landing in the sea. South Korean military officials monitored the preparations for the launch in real-time alongside allies in Japan and the United States, planning joint exercises in response that would include American strategic assets.

North Korea confirmed the testing of an intercontinental ballistic missile, claiming it surpassed all previous records. State news agency KCNA quoted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stating that the actions of North Korea's adversaries underscored the need to strengthen its nuclear capabilities. The country reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its nuclear arsenal.

Japan also acknowledged the missile test, with Defense Minister Nakatani declaring it an intercontinental ballistic missile. The missile reportedly remained airborne for around 86 minutes, reaching an altitude of 7,000 kilometers, longer than any previous missile tested by North Korea.

The United States condemned the intercontinental ballistic missile test, labeling it a clear violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions, as stated by National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett.

On the same day, South Korean military intelligence reported that North Korea is close to testing a long-range missile capable of reaching the U.S. The country has positioned a mobile missile launcher, potentially for an intercontinental ballistic missile test timed with the U.S. presidential elections.

North Korea is also believed to have completed preparations for its seventh nuclear test, the last of which occurred in 2017. Under UN resolutions, the isolated nation is prohibited from testing ballistic missiles of any range. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated recently, following reports of North Korean soldiers being sent to Russia for operations in Ukraine.

The conflict surrounding North Korea's weapons programs has become increasingly volatile in recent years after a period of relative calm. Since early 2022, the country has conducted several missile tests, including nuclear-capable cruise missiles. The last test of a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile took place on December 18 of the previous year.
