Escalation of Conflict: Israeli Airstrikes Follow Missile Attack from Gaza on October 7, 2024

On the morning of October 7, 2024, sirens sounded in border communities of Israel due to a missile attack from Gaza, coinciding with memorial services for victims of last year's Hamas massacre. According to the Israeli military, three projectiles were intercepted, while one fell in an open area without causing damage or injuries.

In response, Israeli fighter jets targeted Hamas rocket launchers and tunnels throughout the Gaza Strip, which the military described as an 'immediate threat' to Israel.

On the preceding day, at least 45 Palestinians were reported dead and 256 injured during Israeli bombardments in central Deir al-Balah, where strikes hit a mosque and a school sheltering displaced persons amid ongoing conflict.

Since October 7 of last year, over 41,870 Gazans have died, and nearly 97,200 have been injured, according to the enclave's Ministry of Health based on hospital casualty counts.
