Meta Platforms is embarking on an ambitious project to construct the world's longest submarine telecommunications cable, named Project Waterworth. This 50,000-kilometer cable will connect South Africa, the United States, India, Brazil, and other key regions, aiming to enhance global connectivity and digital inclusion.
The cable will feature 24 fiber pairs, significantly increasing broadband capacity and data transmission speeds. It builds upon Meta's previous involvement in the 2Africa cable. Meta emphasizes that this infrastructure will drive economic cooperation and unlock innovation, particularly in India and South Africa.
The project, expected to cost billions, will employ advanced routing strategies and burial techniques to ensure resilience. This announcement comes amid increasing competition in global connectivity, with Google also investing in undersea data routes.
