Meta Enters Humanoid Robot Race

Meta is launching a new division within its Reality Labs unit to develop AI-powered humanoid robots, according to an internal memo. The company aims to integrate its Llama AI models into robotics, targeting household tasks and broader applications.

Leading this initiative is Marc Whitten, former CEO of self-driving car company Cruise, now Meta’s vice president of robotics. The company is also expanding its retail efforts, focusing on direct sales of its Quest headsets and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Meta has been researching "embodied AI" for years, aiming to create AI assistants capable of interacting with the physical world. While the robotics industry has faced challenges, Meta sees its investment as a step toward advancing both AI and automation.

Rather than launching its own branded robot, Meta is exploring partnerships with robotics firms like Unitree Robotics and Figure AI, focusing on developing AI, sensors, and software for various manufacturers.
