UK Releases First AI Cyber Security Standard to Protect Digital Economy

The UK government has published the world's first AI cyber security standard, aimed at protecting the digital economy from cyber threats to artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The voluntary code of practice and implementation guide, released in January 2025, follows global stakeholder feedback and forms the basis of a new global standard for secure AI through the European Telecommunications Standards Institute.

The standard's 13 principles emphasize protecting AI systems from hacking and sabotage, guiding developers to create secure and resilient products. The UK AI sector generated £14.2 billion in revenue last year, and the standard aims to maintain this growth while safeguarding critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks.

The AI Cyber Security Code of Practice has been released to help developers and end users implement AI safely without stifling innovation. While this is UK guidance, it can be used as global good practice alongside other regulations such as the European Union AI Act, Canada's voluntary code of conduct, and Brazil's first AI regulation, currently under review.
