OpenAI announced on January 30, 2025, a partnership with U.S. national laboratories to enhance scientific research using its latest artificial intelligence (AI) models. The creator of ChatGPT stated that as advanced AI continues to reshape global geopolitics, this collaboration presents a critical opportunity to guide this transformation.

The agreement is described by OpenAI as the beginning of a new era, where AI will drive scientific advancements, strengthen national security, and support U.S. government initiatives.

OpenAI views the U.S. government as a crucial partner in its goal to build artificial general intelligence (AGI), contributing in sectors such as health and energy.

The advanced AI models will be utilized to accelerate U.S. technological leadership, identify new disease treatment and prevention methods, promote energy leadership, and enhance security through early detection of natural and artificial threats, including biological and cyber threats.

OpenAI will collaborate with Microsoft and deploy the 'model o1' or another model from the 'o' series on Nvidia's supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This partnership aims to develop future projects to support the U.S. government and ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity.
