Severe Winds Disrupt BC Ferries, Nov 4, 2024

High winds in the North Strait of Georgia and northern Vancouver Island have led to the cancellation of several BC Ferries sailings, with further cancellations anticipated.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning advisory for Greater Victoria, northern Vancouver Island, and the Central Coast regions at approximately 4:30 a.m. on November 4, 2024.

In Victoria, westward winds are expected to persist until early evening, with gusts ranging from 70 to 90 km/h. Northern Vancouver Island is experiencing even stronger gusts, estimated between 90 and 110 km/h.

According to Environment Canada, a potent storm has brought moderate to strong southeast winds to the Greater Victoria area this morning. These winds are forecasted to shift to very strong westerlies later in the day. Conditions are expected to improve tonight as the storm moves eastward and weakens.

The national weather authority cautions that high winds may cause loose objects to be tossed around, leading to potential tree branch breakage and power outages. Currently, there are 51 reported power outages on Vancouver Island, affecting approximately 19,500 BC Hydro customers.

Travelers are advised to check the BC Ferries current conditions page before planning any sailings during this wind advisory.
