On October 26, 2024, severe weather is expected to affect at least ten states in Mexico, particularly in the southern and southeastern regions, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).
The SMN has forecast intense rains in Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, and Quintana Roo, while heavy rainfall is anticipated in Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Yucatán.
Accompanying the precipitation will be electrical activity, strong wind gusts, and potential hail in some areas. Water accumulation may lead to landslides, increased river and stream levels, and flooding in low-lying areas.
The SMN cautioned that heavy to intense rainfall could result in standing water, flooding, and landslides, as well as rising levels in rivers and streams.
Heavy rains are also expected in Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, and Puebla, with showers forecasted in Michoacán, Guerrero, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and the State of Mexico. Isolated rains are predicted for Mexico City, Nuevo León, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Morelos, and Tlaxcala.
The rainy conditions stem from the interaction of several atmospheric phenomena, including a low-pressure channel over eastern and southeastern Mexico, a high-altitude trough, atmospheric instability, and moisture influx from the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea.
Additionally, a cold front extending along the northern border will interact with a subtropical jet stream, generating strong winds in the northeast.
In Oaxaca and Chiapas, winds from the north are expected to reach gusts of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour, potentially raising wave heights to three meters in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec. Coastal areas of Veracruz and Tabasco will experience winds of up to 60 km/h, while Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán may see gusts of up to 40 km/h. In the northern and northeastern regions, these winds could cause dust storms, particularly in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and surrounding areas.
The SMN has also predicted extreme temperatures for this Saturday in various regions of Mexico.
In Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa, maximum temperatures are expected to reach 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, while Baja California, Nayarit, Jalisco, and Colima may see highs of 40 degrees.
Conversely, mountainous areas of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango could experience minimum temperatures between -5 and 0 degrees Celsius, with the possibility of frost. In mountainous regions of Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Tlaxcala, and other central states, temperatures are expected to range between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius.
