After months of delays, the historic ocean liner SS United States is finally set to leave its long-time berth in South Philadelphia. On Thursday morning, the ship will be moved to a nearby dock, and by Saturday at 4 AM, it will begin its journey down the Delaware River.

The Final Voyage of a Maritime Icon

🔹 SS United States will pass under the Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry, and Delaware Memorial Bridges.
🔹 Traffic on the bridges will be temporarily halted to ensure drivers remain focused while the ship moves underneath.
🔹 The journey to Mobile, Alabama, will take two weeks, where the vessel will be prepared for submersion in the Gulf of Mexico.

A New Role: The World’s Largest Artificial Reef

Once preparations are complete, SS United States will become the largest artificial reef in the world. This project will not only preserve the legacy of the iconic liner but also create a thriving marine ecosystem in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

“We are excited to move forward with the next phase of creating the world’s largest artificial reef while preserving the incredible history of SS United States,” said officials from Okaloosa County, Florida.

A Long-Awaited Departure

The ship was originally scheduled to be moved in December, but the U.S. Coast Guard delayed its departure due to safety concerns regarding its structural condition, oil residues, and a potentially damaged ballast tank. Now, with all necessary safety requirements met, the legendary liner is finally ready for its new purpose.

SS United States remains a symbol of its era, and now it will continue its legacy—this time as a unique marine sanctuary, fostering new underwater life.
