In a significant initiative to combat biodiversity loss, students from a primary school in France have planted nearly 750 tree saplings across 300 meters of land, designed to resemble two lungs. This project, led by teacher Flora Chardonné, emphasizes the importance of polyculture in preserving the environment and preventing soil erosion.

The students, equipped with boots and tools, learned the intricacies of planting various species including Ajonc d'Europe, cornouiller, and églantier. The hands-on experience aimed to instill a sense of responsibility in young minds regarding the preservation of rich biodiversity areas, which are at high risk of species extinction due to practices like monoculture.

Romain Tremeau, an artisan landscaper involved in the project, highlighted the importance of educating youth about the ecological impacts of their actions. The students will continue their efforts in the spring by planting hedges as part of the 'Sensibilis'haie' program, supported by their local municipality. This initiative not only aims to enhance biodiversity but also to foster a community commitment to environmental stewardship.

With an anticipated mortality rate of 40 to 60% for the saplings, Tremeau believes this sacrifice is essential for the greater ecological good. The project, costing approximately 6,500 euros, reflects a collective effort to nurture the environment and inspire future generations to take action in preserving our planet's flora and fauna.
