Andalusia Invests €1.3 Million in Ecological Restoration to Combat Wildfires in Sierra de Huétor

Granada, Spain - The Junta de Andalucía has initiated a significant ecological restoration project in the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park, focusing on the Fardes River area. With a budget of €1.3 million, this initiative aims to prevent wildfires amidst increasing climate change threats.

The project includes the removal of a deteriorating artificial poplar plantation spanning 16.82 hectares, which has been plagued by pest infestations and fallen trees. This intervention not only enhances visitor safety but also improves the effectiveness of firefighting efforts.

Manuel Francisco García, the territorial delegate for sustainability, emphasized that the project aims to create a mosaic landscape with 700 native riparian species, reducing wildfire risks. The restoration covers 253.82 hectares and enhances access to the area for firefighting personnel.

These efforts are crucial in the context of climate change, which is expected to increase the frequency and severity of wildfires. The restoration not only mitigates fire vulnerability but also enhances carbon sequestration, contributing to environmental sustainability.

The Sierra de Huétor Natural Park is renowned for its ecological diversity, combining Mediterranean forests and rich wildlife, making it a vital tourist and educational resource.
