In the heart of Yucatán, Mexico, indigenous Maya woman María Bacab, known as a "seed guardian," is championing the revival of the milpa, a traditional Mesoamerican polyculture system that combines corn, beans, squash, and other vegetables. This practice not only sustains her family but also promotes food security in a region where poverty affects nine out of ten residents.
Bacab, who manages a one-hectare plot while raising her seven children, is part of a collective of 11 milpa producers in the community of X'box. They store and exchange seeds to ensure resilience against climate challenges such as droughts and floods. Over 3 million maize farmers across Mexico cultivate approximately 8 million hectares, with the milpa being essential for local diets and cultural identity.
Despite being the seventh largest producer of maize globally, Mexico faces significant food security challenges, importing millions of tons to meet domestic demand. Initiatives like the "Milpa for Life" project, funded by Heifer International, aim to enhance productivity and income for local farmers, targeting a 41% increase in milpa yield by 2027.
In nearby Tahdziú, another milpa farmer, Leonardo Puc, emphasizes the importance of maize for survival, stating, "We cannot remain idle." The project has already benefited over 10,800 individuals since its inception in 2021, with a goal of reaching 40,000 by 2027. These efforts highlight the critical role of traditional agricultural practices in addressing global food security challenges.
Additionally, women like Flora Chan in Maní are diversifying their income through free-range chicken farming, contributing to local economies and improving nutrition. The "Kikiba Collective" supports women in rural areas, providing training and resources to enhance their livelihoods. As these initiatives grow, they not only combat poverty but also preserve cultural heritage and biodiversity in the region.
