Global Initiatives to Restore Forests: Turkey and Indonesia Lead the Way

In a significant global effort to combat climate change and enhance biodiversity, two major initiatives have been launched in Turkey and Indonesia aimed at restoring forests and promoting sustainable practices.

In Turkey, the '81 Cities 81 Forests' project, revived by İş Bankası in collaboration with the General Directorate of Forestry and TEMA Foundation, kicked off with its first tree planting ceremony in Samsun. This ambitious project aims to plant 2.2 million saplings across all 81 provinces over the next five years, enhancing forest cover and supporting local ecosystems. The initiative is expected to contribute to carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation, making a vital impact on the environment.

During the ceremony, İş Bankası's General Manager Hakan Aran emphasized the importance of sustainability, stating that the project not only aims to restore forests but also to provide a better future for the next generation. The first planting phase in Samsun will see 10,000 saplings planted across 7 hectares, with similar efforts planned in other provinces.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, WWF Indonesia and PT Indonesia Epson Industry have launched the 'Trees for Life' initiative in the Sebangau-Katingan region. This project aims to restore 2.35 million hectares of degraded forest and empower local communities through a community-based approach. Over the next three years, 200,000 trees will be planted as part of the restoration efforts, which will provide critical habitat for endangered species, including the Bornean orangutan.

The Sebangau-Katingan landscape is vital for biodiversity but faces threats from agricultural expansion and other human activities. The restoration efforts are designed to revive ecosystems, support local livelihoods, and mitigate climate change impacts.

Both projects highlight the significant role of community engagement and corporate responsibility in environmental sustainability, setting a precedent for other nations to follow.
