The Governor of Córdoba, Martín Llaryora, has launched the Comprehensive Ecological Restoration Plan (PIRE) aimed at addressing urgent environmental challenges. This initiative focuses on three key principles: conserving healthy ecosystems, reforesting degraded areas with native flora, and controlling invasive species that threaten local biodiversity.
The provincial government has allocated funds from the Post-Fire Environmental Remediation Plan to support various restoration projects. PIRE will collaborate with over 150 organizations, businesses, and producers, fostering significant environmental impact while generating scientific knowledge for informed public and private decision-making.
Llaryora emphasized the importance of defending both the planet and local flora and fauna as integral to cultural preservation. He highlighted recent efforts to fund environmental restoration projects, including the establishment of tree nurseries and reforestation programs that create green jobs.
Victoria Flores, the Minister of Environment and Circular Economy, stated that this program represents a political commitment to envision Córdoba as a green province. The plan aims to balance environmental sustainability with economic development, addressing climate change and ecological restoration.
Many measures under the PIRE are already underway, including the Green Lungs Program, which conserves peri-urban environments, and the Provincial Native Forestation Plan, which has planted over 70,000 native trees across 23 departments. The program also includes a Seed Bank initiative, distributing hundreds of thousands of native seeds to promote biodiversity.
With an investment exceeding 18 million in wildlife rescue centers, the Provincial Wildlife Program aims to enhance conservation strategies and rehabilitate affected species. The comprehensive approach to controlling invasive species and restoring post-fire environments signifies a significant step towards environmental recovery and sustainability in Córdoba.
