Chrysanthemums: A Floral Symbol of Beauty and Longevity Celebrated Worldwide

Chrysanthemums, often referred to as 'mums,' are being celebrated globally for their beauty and cultural significance, particularly in Japan where they are honored during the annual Festival of Happiness. These flowers symbolize optimism and joy, and their rich history dates back over 2500 years to their cultivation in China.

Belonging to the genus Chrysanthemum of the Asteraceae family, these flowers are known for their diverse forms and colors, with around 200 species recognized. However, taxonomic changes mean some species previously classified under Chrysanthemum are now categorized differently. Notably, the common daisy was once known as Chrysanthemum leucanthemum but is now classified as Leucanthemum vulgare.

Chrysanthemums are widespread, found in Eastern Europe, Asia, Canada, and the subarctic regions of America. While Romania lacks native Chrysanthemum species, the country is home to numerous ornamental varieties, particularly Chrysanthemum indicum and Chrysanthemum × morifolium, both of which bloom from August to November.

The most renowned collection of chrysanthemums in Romania can be found at the 'Anastasie Fătu' Botanical Garden of 'A. I. Cuza' University in Iași. This collection is showcased during the annual 'Autumn Flowers' exhibition, which has been a tradition since 1976.

Available from October 2, 2024, a new philatelic collection featuring these stunning flowers can be found at Romfilatelia stores across Romania, celebrating their beauty and cultural importance.
