Severe Drought Affects Flora and Fauna in Brazil and Ancient Whale Discovery in Russia

Brazil's Cuiabá is facing an unprecedented drought, with over 120 days without rain and temperatures soaring above 43°C. This extreme weather is not only impacting the local flora but is also causing noticeable changes in the fauna, particularly among capybaras. These large rodents are exhibiting lighter fur tones due to prolonged sun exposure, a phenomenon explained by veterinary specialists as a result of melanin decomposition in their fur.

Experts warn that the ongoing drought has led to a 5% reduction in the Pantanal region's area, exacerbating the challenges faced by local wildlife. With the combined effects of heat and lack of water and food, many species are struggling to survive. The situation is dire, as record temperatures continue to be reported, with Cuiabá leading Brazil in heat records.

In a separate but equally significant discovery, researchers in Russia have unearthed the remains of an ancient whale on the banks of the Kuban River. Identified as belonging to the extinct group of toothed whales, Eurhinodelphinidae, this find offers a rare glimpse into the marine fauna that once inhabited the North Caucasus millions of years ago. The discovery, made in 2023, is notable as it marks the first marine mammal remains found in the region.

The excavation team is currently working on geological mapping and reconstructing the paleogeographic conditions of the area. This exciting discovery not only enriches our understanding of the region's ancient biodiversity but also highlights the importance of continued paleontological research.
