Record Wildlife Rescues in France

The LPO Audenge Wildlife Care Center in France has reported a record year in 2024, admitting 5,456 wild animals since its inception in 2003. This surge is attributed to severe storms in the first quarter, which resulted in numerous distressed pelagic birds being brought to the center.

Among the notable rescues were ospreys and a royal kite. The center also treated a significant number of European hedgehogs (1,002), domestic pigeons (503), and Turkish doves (481).

In addition to animal rescues, the center received over 10,000 calls related to wildlife distress and coexistence issues, highlighting the importance of public awareness efforts.

One remarkable case involved a great cormorant found with multiple wounds, suspected to be from gunshot injuries. After treatment, including a bandage for a fractured ulna, the bird was successfully released back into the wild.

Tragic stories also emerged, such as that of a grey long-eared bat that succumbed to injuries despite the team's efforts. This species is nearly threatened and faces habitat degradation challenges.

The center has successfully rehabilitated many animals, including dozens of fallen squirrels and three badger cubs raised alongside foxes, all released while maintaining their wild instincts. In total, over 62% of the animals admitted in 2024 were returned to their natural habitats.
