Smaller Dog Breeds Surge in Popularity Following XL Bully Ban

The landscape of dog ownership in England and Wales is changing. Following the recent ban on the American XL Bully breed, many pet owners are now gravitating towards smaller, more adaptable breeds.

As of December 2023, it became illegal to breed, sell, or own an XL Bully unless registered under strict conditions. This shift has led to a notable increase in interest for compact breeds.

According to Puppies.co.uk, the Cockapoo remains the most popular dog in 2024, with an impressive 421,512 views. Cocker Spaniels have also seen a significant rise, securing the second spot with 382,177 views.

The Labrador Retriever and Dachshund continue to hold their places in the top four, while the French Bulldog jumped from ninth to fifth place, nearly doubling its views.

Interestingly, larger breeds like the Cane Corso and Rottweiler still made it into the top 15, indicating a diverse range of preferences among dog owners.

A spokesperson from Puppies.co.uk noted that while smaller breeds are becoming more popular, it’s essential for all dog owners to ensure their pets are well-trained and socialized. Aggression can stem from poor ownership and breeding practices, not just the breed itself.

In summary, the dog world is embracing a shift towards smaller breeds, but responsible ownership remains key to happy and well-adjusted pets.
