Trump Insists Iran Abandon Nuclear Ambitions Amidst New Talks

President Donald Trump reiterated that Iran must abandon any hope of obtaining a nuclear weapon. This statement comes as the U.S. prepares for further talks with Iran in less than a week.

Trump stated, "Iran has to get rid of the concept of a nuclear weapon. They cannot have a nuclear weapon." He made these remarks from the Oval Office, alongside the president of El Salvador.

The President confirmed that the U.S. will hold more talks with Iran next Saturday in Italy. These talks follow initial discussions held one week prior in Oman.

Details of the discussions remain undisclosed. However, they are viewed as a starting point for Washington's efforts to negotiate with Tehran to end its nuclear program.

Iranian state media reported that Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi "briefly spoke" during the two-hour meeting. The White House described the talks as "very positive and constructive," while acknowledging that "very complicated" issues remain unresolved.

Trump has stated that negotiations with Iran need to happen "very quickly." He has not provided a specific timeline before considering military options.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to "bomb" Iran if it does not halt its ambitions to develop a nuclear weapon. The extent of the U.S.'s intention to shut down Tehran's nuclear program remains unclear.

Trump stated, "I'll solve that problem. It's almost an easy one," comparing the end of Iran's nuclear ambitions to ending Russia's war in Ukraine. He added, "I think Iran could be a great country as long as it doesn't have nuclear weapons."
