Panama Announces Support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Panama has declared its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan regarding the Western Sahara, describing it as a "serious and credible" solution to end the ongoing dispute.

This official stance follows a previous agreement within the framework of the "Bolisario Summit," which involves a growing number of countries supporting the Moroccan proposal for a just and lasting solution.

Panama's Foreign Minister, Javier Martinez-Acha, confirmed this during a press conference with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, emphasizing that the autonomy plan represents "the unique and credible basis" for resolving this conflict, underscoring that his country supports a clear and serious approach to the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.

Martinez-Acha added that his country's position is based on its belief in the necessity of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, pointing out that Morocco had presented in 2007 the autonomy plan, which has since gained support from a growing number of major countries and international organizations, including the United States, Spain, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and several African and Latin American countries.

It is expected that Panama's new support will be a positive contribution to the political process that Morocco is pursuing on the international stage, in a way that will contribute to more countries' conviction of the need to abandon the obsolete or biased positions and to seek a political and realistic solution to the conflict, which will enhance security and stability in the Arab Maghreb region and the Sahel.

It is also expected that this Panamanian announcement will constitute a new impetus for the Polisario Front and its supporters, and it is expected that another announcement will be made to expand its supporters in the international arena, in the face of an increasing number of countries supporting the autonomy plan in a way that preserves the sovereignty of the Sahara and ensures the development of the Sahrawi regions under Moroccan sovereignty.
