Spain Welcomes New Lebanese President Aoun, Minister to Visit

The Spanish government congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as the new president of Lebanon by the parliament on January 9, 2025, following a two-year vacancy in the presidency. The government reiterated its commitment to Lebanon's reconstruction and stability.

In a statement, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its intention to work closely with Lebanese authorities for peace and sovereignty in the region. It emphasized that Aoun's election is a crucial step towards advancing the necessary economic reforms in Lebanon.

Next week, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares plans to visit Beirut and later Damascus to meet with new authorities following the fall of Bashar al-Assad. During his visit, Albares is expected to meet with Aoun to discuss the ongoing ceasefire with Israel that has been in effect since November 27, 2024.

Additionally, the minister will meet with General Aroldo Lázaro, the Spanish commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Spain currently has over 600 military personnel deployed under this UN mission and has expressed readiness to increase this number if necessary.
