On June 25, 2025, Nestlé announced its plan to eliminate artificial colors from its U.S. food and beverage products by mid-2026. This decision follows a trend among major food companies to remove synthetic dyes due to health concerns. The move aligns with similar pledges from Kraft Heinz and General Mills.
The initiative is supported by public opinion, with a majority of Americans favoring restrictions on artificial ingredients in processed foods. Several states have already implemented or are considering bans on artificial dyes in school foods. Texas will require safety labels on foods with artificial dyes starting in 2027.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also plans to phase out many synthetic food dyes. The FDA aims to revoke authorization for two dyes and collaborate with the industry to eliminate six others by the end of 2026. Nestlé's CEO stated the company's commitment to serving consumers, with 90% of its U.S. portfolio already free of these dyes.
