Mercosur Summit Reaffirms Support for Argentina's Malvinas Claim

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

At the Mercosur summit held on July 3, 2025, in Buenos Aires, member countries and associated states expressed strong support for Argentina's sovereignty rights over the Malvinas Islands. The joint declaration was signed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia as full members, and by Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, and Peru as associated states.

The statement highlights the "regional interest" in finding a solution to the "prolonged sovereignty dispute" between Argentina and the United Kingdom, in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions. It also emphasizes that unilateral measures, including the exploration and exploitation of natural resources in the disputed area, are not compatible with UN resolutions.

Argentine President Javier Milei, who assumed the pro tempore presidency of Mercosur during the summit, thanked the bloc for its renewed support and stressed the importance of the United Kingdom resuming negotiations. This declaration follows other recent pronouncements supporting Argentina's claim, including declarations from the Organization of American States and the Parlasur.
