In 2024, the Dominican Republic's investment in environmental protection reached RD$8,620.59 million, a 278.41% increase from 2015. This reflects a growing commitment to sustainability and climate change adaptation.
Over 80% of the environmental spending was allocated to biodiversity protection and waste management, with RD$6,964.41 million assigned to these areas. Conservation of biodiversity was the strongest component, receiving RD$6,619.40 million.
The country, a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), faces increasing threats from climate change. The increased investment in preventive measures, such as disaster risk reduction, points towards a transformation of the economic model towards a greener and more sustainable one.
