Australia Faces Stormy Summer as Marine Heatwave Intensifies Climate Change Effects

Australia is bracing for a muggy and stormy summer, with forecasts indicating a wetter and warmer climate from November to February. This change is attributed to a marine heatwave occurring north of the country, exacerbated by global warming.

The weather bureau reports that the upcoming season is expected to be significantly impacted by increased humidity and heat. Last summer's rainfall was 19 percent above the 1961-1990 average, with a national mean temperature 1.62 degrees higher. Notably, last year was classified as an El Niño year, typically linked to hotter, drier conditions, yet was marked by higher humidity due to elevated ocean temperatures.

Scientia Professor Matthew England from the University of NSW highlighted that every degree of global warming results in approximately a 7 percent increase in global humidity.
