UNICEF Condemns Gaza Aid Distribution Plans Amid Humanitarian Concerns in May 2025

UNICEF has voiced strong criticism against the aid distribution plans proposed by Israel and the United States for Gaza, stating that these plans could intensify the suffering of children and families. The concerns arise as these plans involve establishing a Humanitarian Foundation for Gaza to manage food distribution through designated "Safe Distribution Points".

James Elder, a UNICEF spokesperson, expressed apprehension that the proposed approach might exacerbate the existing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He cautioned against using aid as an incentive for displacement, highlighting the difficult choice it imposes on people between leaving their homes and facing potential death.

The proposed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aims to supply essential aid to 1.2 million Palestinians via four distribution centers. Despite these efforts, the UN and other humanitarian organizations have rejected the GHF plan, fearing it might further politicize aid and disrupt current aid structures. The aid community insists that Israel, as the occupying power, should not control aid distribution in Gaza.
