Hamas Delegation in Cairo for Gaza Ceasefire Talks Amidst Continued Israeli Strikes

A Hamas delegation departed for Cairo on April 22, 2025, to discuss "new ideas" for a Gaza ceasefire. This effort occurs amidst ongoing Israeli air strikes, which reportedly killed 26 people across the territory on Tuesday. The renewed effort follows Hamas's rejection of Israel's latest proposal to release hostages.

The delegation, including chief negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya, will meet with Egyptian officials. These discussions follow a call from the new US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, urging Hamas to accept a deal. The deal would secure the release of hostages in exchange for humanitarian aid entry into Gaza.

Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, described Gaza as "a land of desperation" on X. He stated that hunger is spreading due to humanitarian aid being used as a bargaining chip. Since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, at least 1,890 people have been killed, bringing the total death toll to 51,266, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza.
