The UN Office for Human Rights (OHCHR) has confirmed that at least 12,910 civilians, including 682 children, have died in Ukraine due to the ongoing war with Russia. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, reported these figures to the UN Security Council. Nearly 30,700 people have been injured since the beginning of the conflict in late February 2022, through March 2025. Fletcher emphasized that the actual death toll is likely considerably higher. Recent Russian strikes continue to claim civilian lives, including a deadly attack in Kryvyi Rih where missiles hit a playground. Fletcher stressed the erosion of international law and the need for impartial humanitarian principles. He also highlighted the severe impact on women, with a rise in pre-term births and gender-based violence. The UN is struggling to access approximately 1.5 million civilians in Russian-occupied areas. Despite these challenges, humanitarian organizations have reached 1.7 million people with aid in the first two months of 2025, but more funding is urgently needed.
