The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has allocated $64.5 million to support operational costs and upgrades at Al-Makassed Hospital in occupied East Jerusalem. The grant, announced Monday, is under the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to bolster healthcare across Palestinian territories. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the UAE's International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, stated the UAE is coordinating with international and regional organizations to strengthen healthcare services in East Jerusalem, Gaza, and other key areas. World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus noted the UAE's support enables WHO to provide essential medicines and supplies, enhance medical imaging capabilities, improve the obstetrics and gynecology department, and train over 100 residents across 11 specialties at the hospital. Al-Makassed Hospital, established in 1968, has a 250-bed capacity and specializes in cardiac surgeries, pediatric, and orthopedic care.
