US Congress Debates Limiting Military Action Against Iran

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

In June 2025, US lawmakers initiated measures to restrict President Donald Trump's military options regarding Iran. This action comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, particularly following Israeli air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have expressed concerns about the need for prior congressional approval for military actions. Representatives like Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) have introduced resolutions requiring congressional authorization for military actions against Iran.

Similar measures have been proposed in the Senate by Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). These efforts aim to limit funding and military actions against Iran without legislative approval. However, the initiatives face challenges due to the Republican-dominated congressional majority's reluctance to support such measures.
