Washington, June 22, 2025 - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged China to use diplomatic channels to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz.
This appeal follows escalating tensions after Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime passage for global oil shipments.
Iranian officials have suggested the closure of the strait in retaliation for the strikes, prompting the U.S. to seek China's intervention due to its reliance on the waterway for oil imports.
Secretary Rubio warned that closing the strait would be a significant escalation with severe economic consequences. He also stated the U.S. is prepared to engage in dialogue with Iran to de-escalate the situation.
The U.S. military has reportedly conducted extensive strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The Chinese embassy in Washington has not yet commented on the U.S. appeal.
