Macron's UK Visit Focuses on Migration, Defense, and Cultural Exchange

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

During French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to the United Kingdom from July 8 to 10, 2025, discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer centered on illegal migration across the English Channel. A proposed 'one-in, one-out' arrangement aims to return migrants to France while the UK accepts those with familial ties.

This bilateral approach has raised concerns among other EU nations. Macron also emphasized the need for a European-wide solution, highlighting the UK's labor market and immigration controls as factors attracting migrants.

In addition to migration, leaders discussed enhancing defense cooperation, particularly for Ukraine. They agreed to co-chair a summit on July 10, 2025, to boost Ukraine's defenses. Cultural exchanges included France loaning the Bayeux Tapestry to the British Museum.
