Greenland seeks greater benefits from us defense deal, closer eu ties

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

Greenland aims to enhance the benefits derived from its decades-old defense agreement with the United States. Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt expressed this desire while advocating for closer cooperation with the European Union. The 1951 agreement grants the U.S. rights to move freely and establish military bases in Greenland, subject to notification of Denmark and Greenland. Motzfeldt highlighted Greenland's interest in expanding collaboration with the U.S. on climate change, education, and business. She also emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with the EU and diversifying Greenland's economy. A memorandum of understanding was signed in 2023 between Greenland and the EU for a strategic partnership to develop sustainable raw materials value chains. Motzfeldt underscored that the future of Greenland rests with its people. She noted the EU's support for Greenland's autonomy amid external pressures, particularly concerning U.S. interests in the region.
