On July 9, 2025, the Greek Coast Guard rescued over 500 migrants from an overcrowded fishing vessel south of Gavdos, the southernmost island of Greece. The operation, coordinated by the Hellenic Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Coordination Center, involved various vessels and aircraft.
Between July 6 and July 9, 2025, Greek authorities rescued over 1,200 migrants in the Crete and Gavdos areas. These migrants were primarily from the Middle East, North Africa, Egypt, and Bangladesh, attempting to reach Europe from northeastern Libya.
In response to the increased arrivals, Greece is intensifying cooperation with Libya and the EU. The Greek government has announced plans to deploy two frigates near Libyan waters and has urged Libya to cooperate more closely with Greece and the EU to address the migration crisis.
