London Summit Focuses on Ukraine: UK and France Propose Ceasefire Plan, Europe Urged to Re-arm

A summit of Ukraine's supporters in London saw several nations, including the UK and France, express willingness to join a "coalition of the willing" to advance a ceasefire in Ukraine. Following the summit, the UK announced it would provide over £1.9 billion for 5,000 British-made anti-aircraft missiles. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated financial and military support for Ukraine, stating peace would only come if Russia ends the war. He emphasized Ukraine's need for a strong army post-conflict and cautioned against accepting Russia's perspective, particularly regarding the demilitarization of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for Europe to urgently re-arm, planning to present a comprehensive plan at an upcoming European summit. She stressed the necessity of increased defense spending over a sustained period. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about joint plans with the UK regarding the war in Ukraine, mentioning the possibility of a "truce at sea and in energy infrastructure" within a month.
