The Organization of American States (OAS) is set to elect a new Secretary General on March 10, 2025. The election occurs amidst critical hemispheric challenges, including transnational organized crime, migration and humanitarian crises, environmental degradation, and the increasing influence of external powers such as China, Russia, and Iran. These challenges are linked to entrenched authoritarian regimes in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
The election pits Surinamese Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin against his Paraguayan counterpart, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano. The outcome is significant for the Venezuelan opposition, seeking a democratic transition. Lezcano is viewed as likely to maintain pressure on the Maduro regime, aligning with the current approach. Ramdin, potentially backed by CARICOM, may favor a more conciliatory diplomatic approach.
