Scientists turn synthetic DNA into an ultra-efficient memory device

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have developed a hybrid memory device based on synthetic DNA and a perovskite semiconductor. The new technology allows for information to be stored and processed in a single location while consuming 100 times less energy than traditional solutions like flash drives.

The key to success lies in short, rigid sequences of synthetic DNA specifically engineered for electronic needs. They are 'doped' with silver nanoparticles so that the DNA begins to conduct electricity and aligns into an ordered structure. This layer is then integrated with thin films of crystalline perovskite—a material already used in solar cells and lasers.

The resulting memristor retains information even after the power is turned off and operates at a voltage of less than 0,1 volt. The device functions stably at temperatures up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit and remains operational at room temperature for more than six weeks—significantly longer than existing perovskite-based counterparts.

'Usually, storing a larger volume of data requires more energy,' notes study co-author Bed Poudel. 'Our device consumes 100 times less energy, yet its storage capacity is higher than that of traditional drives.'

The combination of DNA and perovskite proved to be significantly more effective than either material on its own. According to Kavya Keremane, this paves the way for creating neuromorphic systems that process data like brain neurons and could significantly reduce the energy consumption of future AI computing.

The work is published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials and is protected by a patent application. The research was supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the universities of Pennsylvania and Minnesota. How will this affect the design of next-generation data centers?
