President el-Sisi Officially Inaugurates 'New Delta' Mega-Project in Dbeiya-1

May 17, 2026, Cairo — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi today officially launched the "New Delta" integrated development project in the city of Dbeiya in western Egypt. The formal ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and various government ministers.

What the "New Delta" Project Represents

The "New Delta" is the largest agrotechnological mega-project in modern Egyptian history, designed to transform the Western Desert into fertile agricultural land. The project spans a total area of 2.5 million feddans (approximately 1.05 million hectares or 10,500 square kilometers).

Its primary objective is to bolster Egypt's food security by increasing domestic crop production and reducing reliance on imports of strategic food products.

Project Water Infrastructure

The central element of the project is a 114-kilometer artificial river that runs alongside the Rod El Farag–Dbeiya road. This man-made waterway is roughly 4 meters deep and 11 meters wide. Every day, approximately 10 million cubic meters of water from the Nile are channeled through the canal.

The water infrastructure includes:

  • 22 kilometers of underground pipelines for water supply
  • 92 kilometers of open canals for water distribution
  • The Al-Hammam treatment plant with a capacity of 7.5 million cubic meters per day—the world's largest facility for processing agricultural drainage water.Water is sourced from the Nile and subsequently recycled through treated agricultural runoff, ensuring the sustainable management of water resources.Agricultural DevelopmentThe project involves converting 2.5 million feddans of desert into arable land. To date, hundreds of thousands of feddans have already been cultivated. A variety of high-quality grains, vegetables, and fruits are being grown for both domestic consumption and international export. In his speech at the opening ceremony, President el-Sisi stated that the "New Delta" would serve as a bridge between Egypt's past, present, and future, proving the nation's ability to transform the desert into a functional economic space.Economic Significance of the ProjectThe total cost of the project is estimated at between $5.25 and $16 billion, depending on the phase of implementation. This initiative is part of Egypt's broader Sahara terraforming program, which encompasses the "New Valley" project first launched in the 1960s.The project is expected to create approximately 10,000 direct agricultural jobs and hundreds of thousands more in related economic sectors. Egyptian agricultural exports are set to increase significantly once the project reaches full implementation.Implementation Timeline2023 — Construction begins on primary infrastructure2025 — Launch of the $5.2 billion first phaseMay 17, 2026 — President el-Sisi officially inaugurates the full programCriticism and RisksSome experts have voiced concerns regarding water scarcity, as Nile resources remain finite. There is also the potential for strained relations with Ethiopia, which relies on Nile waters and is constructing a major hydroelectric dam on the river. Furthermore, the project may impact regional ecosystems within the Western Desert.Strategic Importance for EgyptAs the world's leading wheat importer, Egypt designed the "New Delta" project to reduce its reliance on foreign strategic crops. The initiative aims to provide food for Egypt's expanding population, which currently exceeds 105 million people.President el-Sisi hailed the "New Delta" as the largest construction undertaking in modern Egyptian history. The opening ceremony featured a Quranic recitation by Sheikh Muhammad Ahmed Hassan and a presentation film showcasing the project's milestones.
