In Alaska, even a trip to the store sometimes turns into a nature documentary.
On the morning of July 5, 2026, a young black bear approached the shopping complex at Elmendorf–Richardson military base and did what all decent shoppers usually do:
waited for the automatic doors and walked inside.
No panic. No fuss. No cart.
First, he decided to check out the selection.
He strolled through the food court.
Checked the trash bins.
Then he peeked into the barbershop.
A salon employee was calmly waiting for the first client when a colleague suddenly shouted:
"Bear!"
And it was one of those rare cases where the phrase "next, please" could have ended with a completely unexpected haircut.
But the bear apparently didn't need a hairstyle.
He moved on.
The shopper knew exactly what he wanted
After a short tour, the bear reached the grocery store.
And there, among all the variety of goods, he chose...
one peach.
Not meat.
Not fish.
Not a whole basket of groceries.
One peach.
He ate it and continued his walk.
True, before leaving, the visitor left behind a small "souvenir" right in the corridor.
So formally, the purchase was still paid for.
Just not with the usual currency.
Security escorted the client to the exit
Wildlife officers arrived at the scene.
The bear was calmly led out of the shopping complex and directed back into the forest.
Neither people nor the four-legged shopper himself were harmed.
And now the mall staff have a story that will be hard to beat:
"Remember that customer who came in without shoes, checked out the barbershop, stole a peach, and walked off into the woods?"
But what we like most is one little detail.
The base is called Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, abbreviated as JBER.
And it is pronounced almost like "jay-bear".
So the bear literally came to a place whose name almost means "bear."
Perhaps he simply decided that this was his branch.
