Cuba's 2025 Solar Surge: Chinese Panels Power Renewable Energy Revolution Amidst Blackouts

Edited by: an_lymons vilart

Cuba is aggressively pursuing solar energy in 2025 to combat its ongoing electricity crisis. A key player in this initiative is Hangzhou Duojia Technology Co. Limited, a Chinese company supplying panels for Cuba's ambitious photovoltaic development program.

The goal is to generate 1,200 MW of solar power by the end of 2025, with plans for an additional 800 MW by 2031. This substantial investment aims to alleviate the island's reliance on imported fossil fuels and stabilize its energy system. By the end of 2025, 200 MW of battery systems will be installed to store solar energy, which is key to stabilizing the grid.

While most solar parks will operate without energy storage, concerns remain about potential nighttime blackouts. The long-term maintenance and potential degradation of solar panels are also factors under consideration, as panels typically lose 0.5% to 1% of their generating capacity annually. Despite these challenges, Cuba's commitment to solar energy signifies a crucial step toward energy independence and a greener future. As of the first half of 2025, Cuba has reached 130 MW of solar capacity with the completion of 11 new solar parks.
