Philippines Renewable Energy Surge: DOE Projects 5.6 GW Boost in 2025, MTerra Solar Project Reaches 35% Completion

Edited by: an_lymons vilart

The Philippines is set to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity in 2025, with the Department of Energy (DOE) projecting 5,632 MW of new power capacity to come online by the end of the year. Renewable sources are expected to drive this surge, contributing over 75% of the total, primarily through solar (3,455 MW) and wind (558 MW) projects. This expansion aligns with the country's goals to achieve 35% renewable energy share by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

Key Renewable Energy Projects and Initiatives

Several projects and initiatives are underway to support the Philippines' renewable energy targets. Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGen), through its subsidiary Terra Solar Philippines Inc. (MTerra Solar), is developing a massive solar project spanning Nueva Ecija and Bulacan. As of March 2025, the MTerra Solar Project had reached 35% completion and is poised to be one of the world's largest integrated solar and battery energy storage facilities, delivering 3,500 MWp of solar energy and 4,500 MWh of battery energy storage.

First Gen Corp. is also playing a crucial role in expanding renewable energy access. The company is supplying geothermal power to various businesses, including Sanyo Denki Philippines Inc. and Axelum Resources Corp. In May 2025, the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) Tower renewed its agreement with First Gen for geothermal power supply, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable business practices.

The DOE is actively promoting renewable energy development through various initiatives. In March 2025, the DOE launched the fourth round of the Green Energy Auction (GEA-4), aiming to add 9,378 MW of new capacity from various renewable sources. These efforts, combined with supportive policies and increasing investor confidence, are expected to drive the Philippines towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
