India has emerged as the world's third-largest producer of electricity from wind and solar sources in 2024, surpassing Germany, according to Ember's Global Electricity Review. This achievement marks a significant step in India's transition towards sustainable energy. In 2024, wind and solar energy accounted for 15% of global electricity generation, with India contributing 10%. Clean energy sources in India, including hydro, wind, and solar, constituted 22% of the country's electricity generation. Hydropower accounted for 8%, while wind and solar combined for 10%. India added a record 24 GW of solar capacity in 2024, more than double the additions in 2023, making it the third-largest solar market globally, following China and the US. Globally, renewable energy additions reached a record 858 TWh in 2024, a 49% increase from 2022. India has set ambitious climate targets, aiming for 50% non-fossil installed electric power capacity by 2030 and to build 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity. This transition requires significant investment, with estimates suggesting billions of dollars are needed to meet these goals.
