Spain's electricity system reached record levels of renewable energy generation in 2024. 56.8 percent of all electricity was generated from natural resources such as wind, solar power, and hydropower. The country installed 7.3 gigawatts of new solar and wind capacity, making solar the leading source of installed capacity. Total renewable generation reached 149,000 gigawatt-hours, an increase of 10 percent from the previous year. Wind energy led the mix at 24 percent, followed by nuclear power (21 percent), solar (18 percent), combined cycle (14 percent), and hydropower (12 percent). CO2 emissions decreased by 17 percent to 28 million tons of CO2 equivalent, reaching a historic low. Spain installed 3,400 megawatts of storage capacity, integrating 9,066 gigawatt hours this year. Demand for electricity increased by 2 percent. Red Eléctrica installed 490 kilometers of new circuits, bringing total national capacity to 46,700 kilometers.
