Google Gemini Integrates with Apps, Sparks Privacy Concerns

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

Google's Gemini AI has been updated to integrate with third-party applications like WhatsApp, Messages, and Phone on Android devices. This allows Gemini to assist with tasks such as sending messages and initiating calls.

The integration has raised significant privacy concerns among users. Critics argue that it overrides user preferences, potentially exposing personal data without explicit consent. Google's communication about this change has been vague.

A Google spokesperson clarified that with "Gemini Apps Activity" off, user chats are not used to improve AI models. However, data may still be stored for up to 72 hours for service provision and feedback.

Users can disable Gemini's integration via the Gemini settings page. Even with "Gemini Apps Activity" off, some data may be retained.

Privacy experts advise caution and avoiding sensitive information sharing through Gemini. Conversations may be reviewed by human annotators and retained for up to three years, even after deletion.

As AI becomes more integrated, it's crucial for users to stay informed about privacy policies and protect their data.
