ai Robot Teaches Math in Remote Indian Village School

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

A government primary school in a remote village near the Indo-Nepal border has found an innovative solution to teacher shortages: an AI-powered robot named Echo. Echo, draped in a saree and sporting glasses, teaches math to students in Jajar Chingri, Uttarakhand. The robot answers questions in 22 languages and makes learning fun and engaging. Headmaster Chandrashekhar Joshi, facing a teacher crisis, collaborated with a friend in China to acquire Echo. The robot cost approximately Rs 4.5 lakh, funded through local contributions and Joshi's savings. Despite intermittent internet connectivity, Echo operates effectively in the school's verandah, powered by electricity. Echo's presence has increased student attendance and enthusiasm for learning. The school has a history of innovative initiatives, including mushroom farming and eco-clubs, aimed at enriching the students' educational experience. Joshi's dedication has earned him the Shailesh Matiyani Award.
