Kansas Breaks Ground on First Internet Exchange Point

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

Kansas is set to enhance its digital infrastructure with the groundbreaking of its first carrier-neutral Internet Exchange Point (IXP). Located near Wichita State University, the project aims to provide faster, more affordable, and secure internet access across the region. This initiative is a result of a $5 million grant awarded by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly. The IXP will serve as a central hub for local and regional networks to directly exchange internet traffic. This direct peering reduces latency and costs, benefiting businesses, institutions, and residents. The facility will be managed in collaboration with DE-CIX, a leading IX operator. Expected to be completed in early 2026, the IXP will feature resilient infrastructure to withstand severe weather and power outages. It promises to enable the next generation of AI-powered services by reducing lag time. This project marks a significant step forward for Kansas's digital future.
