Amazon's Project Kuiper Seeks India Approval in 2025: Competing with Starlink

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

Amazon is seeking authorization from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India to launch its Project Kuiper satellite internet service, aiming to compete with Starlink, Jio Space Fiber, and Bharti Airtel.

Having submitted its initial application two years prior, Amazon recently renewed it, requesting a Letter of Intent (LoI) under the GMPCS licensing framework. This precedes the anticipated commercial rollout of Kuiper satellite services later in 2025.

Project Kuiper plans to deploy over 3,200 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver affordable, high-speed broadband to remote areas globally. Amazon launched 27 operational satellites on April 28, 2025, and plans further launches in the coming months. To support its services, Amazon intends to establish ground infrastructure, including 10 gateway earth stations and two points of presence in Mumbai and Chennai.

The Indian satellite communications sector is becoming increasingly competitive. Kuiper and Starlink are expected to offer high bandwidth compared to Jio and Airtel services.
