Meta confirmed and fixed a bug in the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses that caused the devices to record conversations without activation by the wake phrase "Hey Meta." The problem surfaced on Reddit in mid-October 2026: users discovered audio recordings and transcripts of ordinary conversations in the Meta AI app, even though the "Respond without Hey Meta" setting was disabled.
One of the owners reported encountering unauthorized recordings on three pairs of glasses — second- and third-generation models. The white activation indicator sometimes blinked during an ordinary conversation. According to the user, the behavior began after a recent firmware update. Other owners left similar complaints.
Meta responded with a statement to Android Authority: "This issue has been resolved. Users can manage, view and delete voice logs of interactions with Meta AI in settings at any time." The company did not disclose the cause of the malfunction or specify how many devices were affected. Users can check their voice activity history in the Meta app and delete unwanted recordings.
The bug intensified existing concerns about the privacy of Ray-Ban Meta. Questions had already arisen previously about unauthorized video recording and the possibility of disabling the indicator. Now owners can clear the logs themselves, but Meta has not explained exactly how it prevented the error from recurring in the future.
The second- and third-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses remain popular thanks to integration with Meta AI, the camera and audio features. However, the incident shows that even with the "Respond without Hey Meta" activation setting disabled, unforeseen recordings are possible. Owners are advised to regularly check voice logs in the app and keep an eye on firmware updates.
